Vaults Spring from a Monumental Pier
From the center of this space rises a stone pier fifteen feet square,
supporting an arch on each side. The arches rise fifty feet to their
peaks. About the pier are carved several stone lions' heads, each
holding an iron ring in its mouth. There is a pile of strangely wrought,
heavy iron fragments on the ground nearby. They seem indefinably
familiar, but turning a few over in your hands, their function eludes you.
